World Poker Finals Day Two

Tuesday marked the official day two of the World Poker Finals at the Foxwoods Resort and Casino, even though it was the third day of action. The 239 survivors from Sunday and Monday combined into a single field, with the goal of playing down to the final three tables.

It's a long way from $16,800 to $500,000 in chips, but Bill Gazes can give you directions. Just make big calls and avoid bad beats, and you'll be there in no time. Gazes took out fellow professionals Kathy Liebert and Mark Seif on his way to the half million dollar mark. He was the first to reach this milestone, at a time when his nearest competitor had only half as many chips. Gazes ran hot throughout the afternoon, building his chip stack over $600,000 before leveling off slightly.

Allen Cunningham had a strong day two as well. Eugene Ji, who had built up a stack of over $300,000, was Cunningham's whipping boy, doubling him up twice before bowing out in 37th place. The skilled and experienced Cunningham will begin day three in second place.

Day one chip leader Lyle Berman got off to a bit of a slow start, failing to accumulate many chips early. He did manage to keep pace, however, remaining in the top ten the entire day. Berman left himself in great position for day three by taking a $100,000+ pot from Loi Phan on the final hand of the day. Berman's strong finish bumped him up to third place overall with $562,000 in chips.

Day two was also the money day, separating the field into 120 "winners" and 119 "losers." Chip Jett was the unfortunate bubble boy, finishing 121st and receiving nothing but a round of applause from the other players.
