WSOP Announces 2005 Prize Pool Could Reach $100 million

(Las Vegas) -- Organizers of the World Series of Poker, the richest sporting event on the planet, today predicted the total prize pool at this year's tournament will reach $100 million, more than doubling the record the event set just a year ago. With a total of 45 events, the 36th annual WSOP is the longest, largest and most prestigious event of its kind. Its unprecedented growth necessitated its move this year from its longtime home in downtown Las Vegas to the Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino just off the Strip, where the tournament is hosted in a 60,000-square-foot gaming area equipped with 200 poker tables. "With each new event we host, we're breaking another record," said Gary Thompson, director of operations and communications for the WSOP. "We have brought in 450 of the world's best poker dealers to accommodate the enormous crowds flooding in from around the globe looking for both tournament and live-game action. Those players are contributing to a prize pool that will dwarf such events as the Indy 500, the Kentucky Derby and the Masters." The record prize pool is being driven by the unprecedented number of players paying entry fees to WSOP events. In 2003, the WSOP generated a total of 7,572 player registrations and a total prize pool of nearly $22 million. In 2004, the total number of player registrations nearly doubled, reaching 14,054 -- and the total prize pool soared to nearly $45 million. Through only the first 19 events, total registrations at the 36th annual WSOP have exceeded 13,500 and the total prize money has risen beyond the $23.5 million mark. With many of the most popular events still to come, organizers believe total prize money will reach $100 million by the time the tournament's main event begins July 7. (Poker Gazette) , ,

The Poker Gazette: House OKs Bill To Let Charities Host High-Stakes Poker Game

The Poker Gazette: AUGUSTA, Maine -- The Maine House has overwhelmingly approved a bill to allow charities to raise money by hosting high-stakes poker games. It's a measure that backers say legalizes and regulates gambling activity already going on under the radar in many social clubs and charities. After House members approved the so-called Texas Hold 'Em bill Tuesday, the Senate referred it to the appropriations committee for review because it adds three staff positions to the Department of Public Safety. It remains unclear if Gov. John Baldacci would sign the bill. His spokesman reiterated Baldacci's opposition to expansion of gambling in Maine and said he's undecided on the measure. The bill would allow charities to apply for a poker license once every two months. The maximum entry fee for the games would be $100 per person and no more than 100 people would be able to play at a time. Seventy-five percent of the money raised would go to charity." Party Poker Set For IPO at FTSE 100

PartyGaming, the world's largest online gaming company and operator of Party Poker online room, has announced Friday its intent to float an Initial Public Offering of some of its shares at the London Stock Exchange.

The float will be the largest the exchange has seen in nearly four years

The world’s biggest web-based poker firm said it plans to list 23% of its shares on the FTSE 100 through an offer to institutional shareholders to be completed by the end of this month. Reports have put the potential flotation value of the whole firm at up to $10bn (€8.2bn).

PartyGaming, whose PartyPoker.com online poker gaming room was set up in 2001 and has more than one million users, said the offer would allow it to capitalise on growth in online gaming.

Market sources said that PartyGaming plans to price its offer by June 27, and the company will not create any new shares, simply float some of the shares already held by existing shareholders.

PartyGaming said its revenues for the first quarter of 2005 were $222 million, which is up 93 percent from the same period in 2004. Also, the operating profit was $128 million, up 81% from the same period a year earlier. Poker accounted for 92 percent of group revenue last year, with the remainder coming from casino and bingo sites such as Starluck Casino.

The IPO roadshow will not visit the United States.

PartyGaming has more than 1,000 staff including 126 people at its head office in Gibraltar, 57 marketing staff in the UK and 925 customer support and software development workers in India.
