"The Quest" - Richest Poker Tournament

$15 million grand prize. That is what's at stake in the largest poker tournament in history dubbed, The Quest.

Presented by the Las Vegas-based PokerQuest Entertainment, The Quest is set for January 2006 and will be held at The Palms Hotel with a tournament buy-in of $250,000.

Already, the line-up includes 5 World Champions, 8 World Series of Poker Bracelet winners, 3 World Poker Tour champions, and some of the largest cash players in the world. Celebrities already contracted to play are James Woods, Michael Vartan, and Mimi Rogers.

The Quest doubles the $7.5 million prize from the recently concluded WSOP. The $15 million dollar prize for this tourney's champion is the highest first-place professional poker pay out in the history of the sport. The tournament buy-in also is ten times higher than the sports previous record.

The list of "great players" already contracted to play include Chris Moneymaker, Sam Farha, Scotty Nguyen, Eli Elezra, Johnny Chan, Phil Helmuth, Amir Vahedi, John Juanda, Phil Laak, Phil Ivey, David Levi, Erik Seidel, Chip Reese, Annie Duke, Doyle Brunson, Jennifer Harman, T.J. Cloutier, Mel Judah, Howard Lederer, and Daniel Negreanu.

Unlike many of the current tournaments, the Quest will feature only 100 players, at ten shoot-out tables. The winner from each table advances to the final table. The ultimate winner will take home $15 million dollars after beating the 18 other players.

The event will be aired on primetime television.

Poker Challenge: Pro Beats Robot

It wasn't just the WSOP main event that was a success, as organizers for the first ever World Series of Poker Robots said their tournament, which pitted the best computer programmers--via their poker "robots"--against each other, was a smashing success. Longtime I-gaming executive Steve Latham helped promote the event, which invited programmers from India, Canada, Hong Kong and the United States to pit their poker bots against each other in a tournament. The winner, Hilton Gibbons, got $100,000 for his efforts and was invited to a heads-up game against poker pro Phil Lakke (a.k.a. the "Unibomber"), who proceeded to topple Gibbons' bot. For the moment, human's prevail in poker, but University of Alberta professor Jonathan Schaeffer, who was involved in the event, said it may just be a matter of time before the tables are turned. "I don't think that there's a program today that would be a strong favorite versus a human," Schaeffer said, but he added that one-on-one limit Hold'Em glitches can be solved, thereby enabling a computer to play perfectly. It took more than 300 hands for Laak to put away "PokerProbot," and after the action, Laak acknowledged that most average players would have a tough time against it. "It would for sure make money online," Laak said. "At least in the simpler versions of Texas hold 'em with betting limits, bots are better than the average person." New Stu Ungar Biopic in the Works

The image “http://www.lvlife.com/2002/05/images/StuUnger.jpg” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.Warner Brothers Pictures will produce the life story of late poker legend, Stuey Ungar.

Despite his death, Stuey Ungar and his legend remain in the consciousness of poker fans and players everywhere. It's as though his ghost reminds players of the greatness a person can achieve and the pain that can follow it. Stuey Ungar's life story was amazing and Hollywood is taking notice yet again. There has been a movie about Ungar's life already, but interest in his story has been re-kindled by the recent release of the book, One of a Kind: The Rise and Fall of Stuey 'The Kid' Ungar, and the increasing boom in poker's popularity. WSOP media director Nolan Dalla is one of the authors of the book, and really the man whose undying passion for the subject matter led to the release of the book.

Stuey came out of nowhere to beat the best players in the world, winning back-to-back WSOPs in his mid-20s. He made an estimated $30 million playing the game, but his self-destructive personality left him with next to nothing when he died in 1998 from the results of years of drug abuse.

Weekly tournaments with guaranteed prize pots of up to $100,000 at Bodog, where the world plays poker.

Goof Puts Man in Major Poker Tour

Yahoo News (KILLEEN, Texas) - A computer goof has Robert Guinther headed for a seat at the World Series of Poker tournament in Las Vegas later this week. Guinther, 65, entered what he thought was a $10 online poker tournament, but midway through he realized that he had accidentally clicked on a World Series of Poker satellite tournament with a $100 entry fee and it was too late to back out. He went on to win, defeating 180 other competitors and earning a spot in the WSOP $10,000 no-limit championship. The tournament, which begins Thursday, will involve more than 6,600 players who either qualified by winning a satellite tournament or paid the $10,000 entry fee. "This is the dream of a lifetime," Guinther said. "I watch these guys on television all the time, and I'm excited about the chance to sit down and play with them."

Guinther's son, Rik, kept tabs on his father's progress from his home computer in San Antonio and had to explain just what the victory meant.

"When I won, I let out a big Yes!" Guinther said. "I just thought I had won $11,000, but then my son told me over the phone, 'Dad, you've just won a seat in the World Series of Poker!' I screamed so loud, you wouldn't believe it."

Guinther, who settled in Killeen after retiring as an Army sergeant first class in 1985, says he's a little nervous about the next step but knows he'll be fine once play begins.
