Lee Biddulph from Blackpool, England overpowers 3,900 opponents to walk away with $1 million and was crowned Paradise Poker's first Million Dollar Free Roll online poker tournament champ. The final table, which was played out in a mystery tropical location, was made up of nine amateurs, eight from the U.S. who beat out almost four thousand players at Paradise Poker. In the end, it came down to a showdown between Biddulph and Mike Darweesh, a software engineer who processes images from Mars, and lives in Tempe, Arizona.
After seven hours of play at the final table, Biddulph revealed the tension. "Even my teeth are shaking," he said as he played the final hand.
"Paradise Poker is a great experience at the best of times, but throw $1 million in to the pot and make it a freeroll for amateurs and you discover a whole new crowd able to challenge the best of the pros," said Bruce Stubbs, marketing director for Paradise Poker.
"In the end - the $1 Million Freeroll Tournament has been a historic event, lots of fun and ample opportunity for online poker players who want to try out their skills with the best of amateurs. Our second $1 Million Freeroll Tournament is already in progress," Stubbs added.
All finalists received an all expenses paid weekend to a five star resort in Costa Rica for themselves and a guest, plus and additional $10,000 just for making it to the final table.

Poker Share, an online poker offered $100,000 to have its name stamped on a small Kentucky town.
Officials at Poker Share are offering that sum if the western Kentucky hamlet of Sharer -- which has no city council, no grocery and no post office -- changes its name to PokerShare.com.
The proposition has Butler County Judge-Executive Hugh Evans scratching his head, but he's not keen on the idea.
"I can't speak for everybody, but certainly speaking for myself, this isn't going to happen," Evans said Thursday. "When you talk about poker and gambling, we're not for that in our county. It's very conservative."
First dibs went to Sharer because of the similarity of its name to PokerShare.com, said Darren Shuster, a public relations agent working for the poker site.
He found Sharer by doing a MapQuest search on the Yahoo search engine.
Sharer, established on February 15, 1900, was named for Postmaster Moses J. Sharer or his family, according to the book Kentucky Place Names.
The post office closed in the early 1980s.

It's an old-fashioned poker showdown between Hollywood star James Woods' team and poker pro Phil Laak's team in The James Woods Gang Vs. The Unabombers in Poker Royale.
The series is premiering on Friday, October 7 and poker enthusiasts will be able to enjoy two hours of the best poker players in action every Friday night on GSN.
In The James Woods Gang Vs. The Unabombers in Poker Royale, actor James Woods and Phil "The Unabomber" Laak (1st in the 2004 World Poker Tour Main Event and host of E!'s Hollywood Hold 'Em) choose their own teams to battle it out over seven episodes.
Filmed at Pechanga Resort & Casino in Temecula, California, the series features a prize-pot topping $75,000 and bragging rights as to who captained the best team.
On Woods' team are Kathy Liebert (ranked in the top 20 players of all time, winner of POKER ROYALE: BATTLE OF THE SEXES), Bob Goen (Entertainment Tonight), Ted Forrest (five World Series of Poker bracelets), Susie Isaacs (two World Series of Poker bracelets) and Nicole Sullivan (Mad TV, The King of Queens).
Playing for the Unabombers are Jennifer Tilly (2005 WSOP and WPT ladies' events winner), Cyndy Violette (1st Place 2004 World Series of Poker Seven Card Stud), Danny Masterson (That 70's Show), Hassan Habib (2nd Place 2004 World Poker Tour Championship) and Gail O'Grady (NYPD Blue, American Dreams).
The team captains decide which players participate in each match at the coveted final table. All players play a minimum of three games, earning points based on where they finish, hoping to bluff, call and check their fearless challengers. First place in each match earns ten points, second place receives eight points, third place is six points, fourth place is four points, fifth place receives two points. The team with the highest points from the qualifying matches has a chip count advantage going into the finale.
The James Woods Gang Vs. The Unabombers in Poker Royale is part of GSN's poker franchise POKER ROYALE airing every Friday.

The parent company of the World Poker Tour has sued its outlet, the Travel Channel, for allegedly interfering with plans to develop a new poker series on ESPN.WPT Enterprises Inc. sued the Travel Channel and its owner, Discovery Communications Inc., for alleged breach of contract and intentional interference. The case, filed Monday in Los Angeles Superior Court, seeks unspecified damages and various court orders, including a declaration that WPT upheld its side of the contract, while the defendants breached their obligations.
Travel Channel spokesman David Leavy said the outlet continues to recognize that WPT is an important franchise.
"We are planning to very vigorously and aggressively defend and protect our rights under the existing contracts," Leavy said.
According to the suit, WPT had the right to develop other poker-related programming, provided it gave the Travel Channel the first opportunity to license the show and the last right to refusal. WPT said it proposed such a show, Professional Poker Tour, in July 2004 but that negotiations with the defendants were not successful in the 60-day exclusive window.
WPT said it then shopped the show to other networks, including ESPN, which proposed to license the show September 12. That triggered a 15-day "last refusal" period for the defendants, who allegedly sent threatening letters to WPT and ESPN.
One such letter allegedly threatened ESPN with legal action because the Travel Channel said it already had licensed the show, something WPT denied. (Poker Gazette)

Many big names in the poker world entered this event. The top names at Team PokerStars didn't fare as well as they would have liked, as most of their front-runners were out fairly early. Evelyn Ng (evybabee) went out 604th, Chris Moneymaker (money800) fell out in 1,355th, and Greg Raymer (Fossilman) busted in 402nd.
Isabelle Mercier (NoMercy) did manage a very solid performance, finishing in 63rd and winning $1,000,000 freeroll at Paradise Poker $9,337.
Other notables who entered but did not cash were Scott Fischman (emptyseat88), Noah Boeken (Exclusive), Barry Greenstein (crazyplayer), Joe Sebok (fidallio), John D'Agostino (jdags21), Layne Flack (reloadthis), and Brett Jungblut (gank). 135 players were paid money for their efforts, the worst a player who cashed could do was $3,735.
All final table participants were guaranteed at least $56,025—which alone is more than 90% of online tournaments pay out altogether!
In the end, 18-year-old Pandella86 became the fourth WCOOP Main Event champion. (Poker News)

Event six of Borgata's 2005 Poker Open came to a conclusion late Saturday night as Woodside Park, New Jersey's Michael J. Nargi defeated Tamarac, Florida's James M. English for the title. After surviving a field of 323 top players in the $2,500 buy-in event, including several of the biggest names in poker, such as David "the Dragon" Pham, Nargi elevated his game in the final rounds and scored a big victory.
For finishing first, Nargi took home the biggest prize of the 2005 Borgata Poker Open to date with cash that almost doubled the payout of the first-place finishes of several of the previous tournaments. Nargi collected $250,325 and a gold diamond-encrusted Borgata bracelet for winning this grueling 30-hour marathon.
English, who should feel little disappointment with his second-place finish, collected $137,275, and third-place finisher Jason M. Langianse took in almost $70,000 as payouts sky-rocketed for this high buy-in event. Fourth-place finisher, Sal J. Giambrone of Staten Island, NY, collected $56,525 for his efforts.
The 2005 Borgata Poker Open action continues on Sunday with event seven, the Ladies Only, No Limit Hold'em tournament. Over 400 women are registered for the event and are sure to bring their own style and flavor to the male-dominated sport.
Plenty of fireworks will light up the action as the best female players from all over the country try to take home the prestigious title and first-place cash prize.

WPT Enterprises, Inc. has announced the global expansion of its hugely popular World Poker Tour with the signing of two licensing agreements to stage regional versions in Canada and the Philippines.WPT CEO and founder, Steve Lipscomb revealed that the company has concluded agreements with ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corp., the largest integrated media and entertainment company in the Philippines, and Aidan Tracey, a respected Canadian marketing, sponsorship, and promotion expert, to offer multi-tournament WPT Tours in card rooms and casinos in the two countries beginning early 2006.
The events will feature WPT-style Texas Hold'em tournaments, which is expected to draw hundreds of players for increasingly growing prize pools at each stop. The WPT has been airing on television networks in Canada and The Philippines for the past two years, drawing a large following and adding to the global popularity of poker.
"We are very pleased to be able to bring the WPT to the fans in other countries who have been itching to try their hand at making a WPT Final Table," said Lipscomb.
ABS-CBN is being granted the right to create four episodes in the first year, five in the second and six in the third -- and to air them exclusively for four years total. The show will air in both English and Tagalish (a mix of Tagalog and English). The winner of the Filipino WPT Tour will also have a seat in the WPT Championship at Bellagio each April.
The company is involved in television and radio broadcasting, as well as the production of television programming for Filipino domestic and international audiences. It operates 35 stations nationwide that reach an estimated 97% of all television-owning households in the Philippines.
In Canada, Aidan Tracey, who has previously assisted the WPT to secure sponsorship tie-ins north of the border, will develop, stage and market a regional tour. Tracey is currently President of Mosaic Sales Solutions Field Marketing, the leading experiential event marketing company in Canada. Tracey has also produced the World Beer Games, which aired on TV in 2002 and 2003 in many markets outside the USA, including Canada, the United Kingdom and Australia.
Meanwhile, the WPT Season 4 will begin with a Sept. 19-22 event at the Borgata in Atlantic City and will conclude in April for the WPT World Championship in Las Vegas.

Budweiser, the 'King of Beers', has once again been chosen by the World Poker Tour (WPT) as the primary sponsor for its new fourth season, re-signing the company for the third straight year.
Budwesier also plans to promote both WPT programming and of course, beer, at tournaments in select markets across the country.
"We are pleased to continue our three-year relationship with WPT Enterprises (parent company of WPT) and look forward to toasting another year," vice president of corporate media of Anheuser-Busch, Peter Mcloughlin said in a recent press release, adding that WPT is a perfect fit for its Budweiser brand.
Mcloughlin also cites the WPT's broad audience as one of the key reasons for the decision to re-sign Budweiser as the tour's "Official Beer." "As the WPT repositions poker as a leading sport -not just a pastime - Budweiser is the ideal sponsor. Our long association with sports increases poker's recognition by the sports-loving consumer and television viewer," he said.
The WPT's season 4 on the Travel Channel will feature Budeweiser commercial spots and viewers will see the Budweiser logo on the "table ring" area surrounding the final table and on in-show graphics for the popular "hole card camera" segments. The traditional toast to the victor of each WPT event will continue as the show's closing sequence.
According to CEO and WPT Enterprises, Inc. founder Steve Lipscombm, "The WPT has become the gold standard in poker and the Budweiser brand is the same to beer. It's a great match of two iconic brands."
