Joe Bartholdi Wins WPT Championship

PRNewswire/ – The 2006 WPT World Championship will be remembered in a string of superlatives — the most, biggest and first! Joe Bartholdi of Las Vegas, defeated the brightest poker talent from nearly 40 countries.

The finale of WPT’s Season IV drew a record-breaking 605 entrants, generated the highest ever WPT prize pool of more than $15 million, and for the first time in WPT history, awarded more than a million dollars to a player that qualified on a $25 satellite! Bartholdi pockets a coveted first prize of $3.76 million, the enviable title of WPT World Champion and a seat in the 2007 WPT World Championship at Bellagio.

The WPT World Championship is the crown jewel of the WPT’s fourth season. Its $15 million purse brings the total prize money for the 17 Season IV tournaments to a staggering $85+ million. The riveting shows, currently airing on the Travel Channel every Wednesday night at 9 p.m. ET/PT, have revealed the 20 newest WPT Poker Millionaires. After the WPT World Championship that number rises to 23 as the tournament paid more than $3 million to first place, nearly $2 million to second place and $1 million to third place.

New champion Joe Bartholdi was cheered on by a sizable hometown crowd. His post-tournament plans include taking his cheering section out to “celebrate for a while,” and once the party ends he intends go out and “buy a house.” His friends were also heard to be talking about a Bartholdi-funded trip to the Caribbean. Money is no object for the newest WPT Millionaire.

700 Players Vie for 2006 WPT Championship Title

The 2006 World Poker Tour Championship, the $25,000 final event of the WPT Season 4 happens on April 22-24 at the Bellagio Casino Resort in Las Vegas.

The final event of the season, dubbed as the Championship Event of the Five Star World Poker Classic at the Bellagio in Las Vegas, is set to add another 12 to 15 million dollars to the over $80 million estimated to have been played for in this season of the Tour.

The championship event will gather the best in the business no less. Defending champion Tuan Le will face approximately 700 players who will step to the felt this year including Freddy Deeb (UltimateBet Aruba Poker Classic), Minh Ly (Doyle Brunson North American Poker Championship), Barry Greenstein (WPT Invitational), Scotty Nguyen (WPT World Poker Open), Michael “The Grinder” Mizrachi (Borgota Winter Poker Open), Alan Goehring (L. A. Poker Classic) and the leader on the Season Four WPT Player of the Year race, Gavin Smith (Mirage Poker Showdown).

In the early going of 2006, “The Grinder” has dominated the tournament world. With his win at the inaugural WPT Borgata Winter Poker Open, second place at the WPT Tunica event and several other excellent finishes, he sets himself up as a player to watch. While he has cooled off a little from his sizzling start, Mizrachi’s “take no prisoners” aggression at the tables puts him in position to take any tournament he enters.

Expect some 700 players to vie for the coveted WPT Championship at the Bellagio in Las Vegas along with a multitude of online qualifiers and other unknowns looking to make their mark on the poker world. A new WPT champion will be crowned after the Final Table on April 24th.
